Clubs and activities

Orkney offers a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, sports clubs, and facilities that suit a wide variety of interests and abilities. Being part of a small community means that facilities are easily accessible, and local clubs warmly welcome new members.

Sports, athletics, indoor swimming and gym facilities

Pickaquoy Centre

Located in Kirkwall, this is the , arts, and leisure in Orkney. It features:

  • Indoor courts
  • Athletic track
  • Football and rugby pitches
  • Cinema

Stromness Sports Facilities

Stromness has a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, spa and gym, fitness centre located at the .

Hockey

  • has a youth and senior team. They train all year at the Pickaquoy Centre and have a competitive hockey league during the summer.

Football & Rugby Clubs

  • Orkney FC competes in the National Caledonian League during the winter.
  • is an amateur women’s football club that train and play in Kirkwall.
  • is Scotland's most northerly national league club, playing in national division 5, as well as an internal Orkney league. Has junior and senior members.

Golf 

  • houses an 18-hole golf course 
  • Enjoy midnight golf at midsummer when the evening light only dims and never goes completely dark. 
  • Visitors are always welcome, and golf clubs are available for hire 

Triathlon 

  • are holders of the UK's most northerly triathlon 
  • OTC also organise monthly duathlons throughout the winter and a weekly 10-mile time trial over the summer weeks 

Athletics 

  • A variety of athletic activities are available, mostly organised through the , based at the Pickaquoy Centre 
  • Training sessions take place on Weds evenings.  
  • Over the winter there is a series of cross-country races 
  • The summer sees a series of track and field competitions and the Harray half marathon, and Dounby 10K taking place in Sept.  

Roller Derby

  • is a high-paced contact sport that takes place at the Pickaquoy Centre on Friday evenings.
Mind-body

Pilates & Yoga

  • Flow provide a class inspired by pilates, yoga, tai chi and dance. The class focuses on balance, core strength, posture, flexibility and relaxation. Currently being run at the HWU Orkney Campus on Mon and Tues lunchtimes.
  • offers a number of different yoga classes, including mindful yoga, yoga for release, and align yoga.
Surfing, sailing, kayaking and scuba diving

Surfing and windsurfing 

  • Orkney has some of the best surf in Europe, including huge Atlantic waves at the Bay of Skaill on the west coast 
  • There is a small but very keen group of local surfers and windsurfers 

Sailing 

  •  is based on the harbour front in Kirkwall 
  • RYA approved sailing courses with instructors and boats on offer 
  • The club takes part in other local club regattas and hosts an inter-county regatta against Shetland every two years 
  • The club are always keen for new members, particularly those with experience 
  • is a small and friendly sailing club based at the Ness Point end of Stromness harbour, and close to Stromness Golf Club.

Kayaking 

  •  aims to encourage safe sea kayaking around Orkney for paddlers of all levels.

Scuba Diving

  • offers a range of scuba diving courses and guided dives in the world-famous Scapa Flow

Wildlife 

  • Spectacular cliff scenery all along the west coast 
  • Seals, otters, over 300 recorded species of birds, dolphins, porpoises and whales are all regularly seen 
  • Numerous archaeological sites dating back over 5,000 years
